AI4SIDS

Grand Prize Winner · 2024 AI Innovation Challenge at COP29

AI-driven Climate Resilience Platform for Small Island Developing States

AI4SIDS is a research and innovation initiative led by The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, exploring how responsible artificial intelligence, climate and geospatial data, predictive analytics and stakeholder knowledge can support climate-resilient decision-making in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Originally recognised as the Grand Prize winner of the 2024 AI Innovation Challenge at COP29, AI4SIDS entered a new three-year research and implementation phase in September 2026, supported by The UWI Research and Development Impact Fund.

Our Journey

From idea to implementation

2024

From Idea to International Recognition

AI4SIDS received the Grand Prize in the 2024 AI Innovation Challenge at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

2024 - 2026

Research & Prototype Development

The concept progressed through research, prototype development, AI experimentation, technical capacity building and stakeholder engagement.

2026 - 2029

Research & Implementation

AI4SIDS is now advancing through a UWI-funded research and implementation programme focused on responsible AI, climate decision intelligence, community resilience and real-world evaluation.

What We Are Working On

Four areas of focus

Government & Decision Intelligence

Exploring responsible AI-enabled approaches to climate and disaster-risk decision support.

Responsible AI & Technology

Developing and evaluating AI, predictive analytics and data-integration approaches with human oversight, transparency and responsible data governance.

Communities & Resilience

Understanding how communities access, understand and use climate-risk information and incorporating community perspectives into AI4SIDS.

Research & Impact

Generating research, capacity building and practical lessons for responsible AI and climate resilience in SIDS.

Current Research Team

The people leading AI4SIDS

AI4SIDS brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, statistics, climate and geospatial science, behavioural and community research, public health, software development and responsible innovation.
